Ladies and Gentlemen,
The first Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Media Summit was held on December 20, 2017 in Beijing, People’s Republic of China. This event was viewed as a significant milestone in cooperation within the media sector in the six Mekong-Lancang countries, which have the common purpose and objective to promote peace and stability in the region, narrow the development gap and enhance cooperation among Mekong-Lancang riparian countries. The success of this mission will be possible due to the creation of mutual understanding, solidarity and enhanced dialogue and cooperation that is based on equality and mutual benefit.
Initiative No. 4, which was stipulated in the joint declaration of the of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Media Summit at the end of last year, named “Mekong-Lancang community cooperation for a bright future” is the main topic of discussion this year.
As part of preparations for the summit, representatives of media organisations from the six Mekong-Lancang countries attended a media training session and took field trips to several tourist sites in Laos to collect data and produce a variety of tourism documentaries. The media content produced will be disseminated in the participating countries as part of efforts to promote Lao tourism in 2018. This year, the government of the Lao PDR launched the Visit Laos Year 2018, with the aim to encourage tourists from all corners of the world to visit and experience cultural, historical and natural tourist sites in Laos.
Apart from this, the summit will provide another sub technical discussion forum for participants to share their knowledge on new media, and the advertising of tourism through Mekong-Langcang media cooperation.
I am confident that at this Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Media Summit, the media delegates from six countries will use this opportunity to jointly discuss, develop and enhance media cooperation among 6 countries in the region and to ensure satisfactory and greater outcomes.
Once again, on behalf of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, especially the Lao media and Lao people throughout the country, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the People’s Daily of the Republic of China, which showed confidence and trust in selecting Laos as a partner to host this summit.
Last but not least, I wish this summit great success. On this auspicious occasion, I now declare the official opening of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Media Summit.
